Sergey Mikhaylovich Barkhin is a Russian set designer, visual artist, professor, architect, People's Artist of the Russian Federation (1998), Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1991), Laureate of the State Prizes of the Russian Federation (1993, 2001). Full member of the Russian Academy of Arts.

He was born on March 31, 1938, in Moscow. In 1956-1962 he studied at the Moscow Institute of Architecture, majoring in architecture and book illustration. He worked in many theatres in Moscow, Vilnius, Gorky, Sverdlovsk, Saratov, Kuibyshev and others.

Between 1988 and1992, he was the chief designer at the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre, in 1995 to 2000 he was the chief designer at the Bolshoi Theatre.

He has designed the set and properties for over 200 productions (opera, ballet and drama) in many cities of the former Soviet Union and abroad: in Germany, Finland, Sweden, Japan and the Czech Republic.

He collaborated with David Borovskiy on the design of the museum-apartment of Vsevolod Meyerhold (1994).

From 1992 to 2007 he was the Head of the Set Design Department of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (RATI-GITIS). Full member (academician) of the Russian Academy of Arts (2011). Member of the Union of Architects (1965), artists (1974), theatre figures (1978) and writers of Moscow (2013).

Designed the set and properties for the following productions performed at the Maly Theatre:

1978 - «Jealous of Herself» by Tirso de Molina, directed by Leonid Kheyfets

1984 - «Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man» by Alexander Ostrovsky, directed by Igor Ilinskiy

1992 - «The King of the Jews» by Konstantin Romanov, directed by Vladimir Dragunov

2014 - «The Masquerade» by Mikhail Lermontov, directed by Andrey Zhitinkin
